Billy Wilder is at his acerbic best in this comedy about a TV cameraman injured during a football game and a shyster lawyer, who exaggerates the injuries to defraud the insurance company for damages. Walter Matthau gives a deliciously cynical performance as the scheming ambulance-chaser willing to go to any lengths to win his case.

Director Wilder and writing partner I.A.L. Diamond were nominated for Best Screenplay yet again following their previous triumph with The Apartment. Matthau and Lemmon are teamed together for the first time, with Matthau winning his only Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor.
